The current efforts to ensure clean water and sanitation for all by 2030, according to Sustainable Development Goal 6, are not enough. One major obstacle is climate change which constantly undermines the struggle for more momentum.

Basic water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) is not usually a top priority in the global climate policy and finance arena. But as climate change impacts can greatly undermine access to basic WASH services, it is crucial that more support for ensuring climate resilient WASH services is secured at the highest levels.

Our engagement in WASH International Policy

The objective is to influence and connect the policy debates at international and country levels, within the water space and beyond, to climate international policy processes. In doing so, the aim is to support countries in ensuring resilient and sustainable water and sanitation services for citizens.

SIWI is an active member of Sanitation and Water for All’s (SWA) Climate Action Task Team, and a longstanding member of SWA’s Research and Learning Constituency. We contribute to the preparation of international events such as the Conference of the Parties (COP), ensuring that WASH features more prominently in discourse. SIWI also responds to calls for expert advice and input on many international WASH processes, such as calls for SDG 6 good practices and accelerator actions, and has advised on multiple steering committees and boards of various initiatives (e.g., OECD’s Water Governance Initiative, Water Integrity Network).
