New regulation to reduce water pollution in Kyrgyzstan
Pollutants discharged into water bodies is a serious problem in Kyrgyzstan, especially in industrial and mining areas and regions without water treatment systems. Poor drinking water quality contributes to high infection rates and child mortality caused by diarrhea. But should change that.
The State Agency for Environmental Protection and Forestry (SAEPF) in Kyrgyzstan conducted an analysis of the regulatory framework related to waste water. The analysis showed a gap in how to determine the maximum permissible level of contamination of water resources into surface sources.
Building on the results of the analysis, the Government of Kyrgyzstan approved legislation establishing standards for maximum permissible discharges of pollutants into water bodies. The legislation was developed by SAEPF under the GoAL WaSH project. This regulation will help the Government reduce discharges of pollutants into the environment.
«We must not only control surface water quality, but also the level of sewage pollution. The new regulation will help us meet this challenge,” said Mr. Abdykalyk Rustamov, director of SAEPF.
