Action Platform for Source-to-Sea Management @ World Water Week
World Water Week 2018: Water, ecosystems and human development, is the perfect setting to learn more about the Action Platform for Source-to-Sea Management. Join us at the following events where we will delve into how source-to-sea management can restore ecosystems while providing new opportunities for economic development.
Monday 27 August
Business Leadership for Oceans – Source-to-Sea Solutions (14.00-15.30 NL Music Hall)
Many companies are making significant efforts to understand and address sustainable development and implement SDG 6 and 14. Cross-sectoral leadership and collaboration are needed to ensure that efforts by individual companies and sectors achieve the synergies and scale necessary to address source-to-sea challenges. This session will bring together CEOs/senior corporate representatives from different sectors to offer industry perspectives on the road ahead for achieving SDGs 6 and 14.
Convenors: Action Platform for Source to Sea Management / Stockholm International Water Institute / World Ocean Council / Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency / Swedish Leadership for Sustainable Development
Microplastics in Freshwater Environments (14:00-15:30 FH 307)
Microplastics in freshwater environments represent a growing concern. The presence of microplastics in freshwater have been reported in different parts of the world—even in remote areas. This event presents the state of art knowledge, research and policies on microplastics in freshwater including how source-to-sea management can help prioritise investments in reducing microplastic pollution.
Convenors: UNESCO International Hydrological Programme / Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency
Tuesday 28 August
IWRM and Ecosystem-based Approaches – Complementary, Duplicating or Competing (9:00-15:30 NL 357)
Three sessions looking at integrated water resources management (IWRM) and ecosystem-based approaches and their ability to address water challenges from source to sea. While these approaches are meant to balance environmental and economic interests, the perspective of downstream water bodies has often been ignored or considered a secondary priority. This particularly affects delta, estuarine and coastal ecosystems, which are among the most productive and most threatened on the planet, and whose management has fallen in-between the mandates of responsible authorities.
Convenors: Stockholm International Water Institute / Global Water Partnership / Global Environment Facility – International Waters: Learning Exchange and Resource Network / Action Platform for Source to Sea Management / National and Kapodistrian University of Athens
Wednesday 29 August
The Source-to-Sea Balancing Act – Development Needs and Ecosystem Preservation (14:00-15:30 FH 307)
Throughout the source-to-sea continuum, water connects ecosystems that provide critical services to humans and wildlife. More than half of the global value of ecosystem services is provided by coastal ecosystems, but much of it is jeopardized by human activities that take place upstream. Source-to-sea approaches are increasingly needed to address the pressing challenges in river basins and along coasts while responding to demands for development and adapting to climate change.
Convenors: UNDP-SIWI Water Governance Facility / Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management / Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations / International Union for Conservation of Nature / Delta Alliance / Action Platform for Source to Sea Management / Future Earth Coasts
