Water Dialogues – Why We Can’t Afford to Waste Water
This SIWI webinar series invites the audience to get acquainted with the laureates’ and SJWP winners’ respective work and to contribute to the discussion on how the world needs to respond to current challenges, and future needs. The series will be divided into five different sessions, where each session will centre around a dialogue between one Stockholm Water Prize Laureate and one Stockholm Junior Water Prize winner.
This is part of the Water Dialogue webinar series, and will look into the topic of the value of wastewater.
WEBINAR RECORDING
After experiencing one of the worst droughts in the country’s history in 2019, Anisa Philasouk & Sittiphon Pathammavong came up with the idea to re-use wastewater from households. The objective was to save water and bring a solution for people to still use water for agriculture, gardens and fish farms. By treating the water with natural ingredients, it was safe and simple to use. Anisa and Sittiphon were the nominees for the Stockholm Junior Water Prize from Laos in 2020.
Professor Mark Loosdrecht’ research has led to the quite widely used Anammox and Nereda technologies for wastewater treatment. The Anammox process is a resource efficient way to remove nitrogen from wastewater. In industries it is used after anaerobic wastewater treatment while in municipal wastewater treatment it is used in combination with sludge digestion. In both cases this results in an energy producing treatment process. Mark Loosdrecht was awarded the Stockholm Water Prize for his research in 2018.
